Sailor Halloween

Description

A while ago, I went on a bit of a youtube splurge and watched, like, a billion episodes of Sailor Moon in one night. Amidst my shoujo-themed dreams full of short skirts, talking cats, and sexy ambiguous villains, a concept came to me: themed-sailor scouts.

I guess I've always had a weakness for the character designs in Sailor Moon; the color schemes, the hair types, the shoe types, etc. Therefore, I decided to integrate my own concepts and ideas for Sailor Scout designs, combined with my love for a variety of holidays, and Sailor Halloween is the first of the series.

This was done completely in Prisma Color, and the pose was my own design. I wish I wouldn't have drawn her so large because originally I wanted to fit her entire body into the drawing, but oh well.

I loved designing her, because it gave me a chance to exploit the wanton awesomeness of Halloween while sticking to the formulaic structure of the Sailor Scout. Originally I was going to give her long, stringy black hair, like Sadako from Ringu, but decided against it. I got my inspiration for her hair from Lust from FMA because her hair is both simple and exquisite: you can tell that it's black, and adding simple gray highlights give it definition and fullness.

I've always had a thing for striped leggings, so of course I decided to keep the theme of black and orange on her legs. Plus, Sailor Scout skirts are already ridiculously short. As sexy as she is, Sailor Halloween is a classy lady. I loved making her ribbons and bows tattered, giving her the weathered Halloween look we see in traditional Halloween fan art. Her boots were fun to do as well, because I honestly have no skills at rendering leather. But for the sake of this drawing, I decided to kinda cut loose and go with what looked good. Inspiration for her boots came from I-No from Guilty Gear because beforehand, I had no understanding of thigh-high boot structure. The scythe was completely free hand, as were the gloves and the snazzy hat.

I submitted her for an amateur anime contest not long ago, but didn't place. However, some other artist was looking at it and they said that the composition was really good. I just need to work on anatomy a bit more, and focus on getting the entire body into the picture.

Ah well. Sailor Halloween, everybody.
