It's a great thing when you're requested to draw something that you already love drawing. So when my Mom's coworker sent me an email requesting me to draw her 7-year-old daughter hanging out with the characters from MLP FiM, I of course jumped at the chance.
This coworker, now my client, had seen the Breakdown in Wonderland picture I did and, obviously unhindered by a crossdressing male robot, gravitated toward Pinkie Pie in the picture. She said that she and her daughter loved the new MLP show, and she wanted a MLP picture for her daughter as a result.
Composition was executed on Bristol Board, and is made up of two separate parts. One part was the Mane 6 with the coworker's daughter, the other part was Princess Celestia.
Altogether, this took about 4 weeks to complete. The coworker sent me pictures of her daughter to work with, so I had to draw her a whole bunch of times before I got her face as accurate as I could.
Linework took maybe a couple of days, but the thing is, I actually wound up drawing this whole composition three times, inking it two times, and coloring it two times before I finally liked it enough to say "Okay, this is worth charging someone money for." The first colored version looked good, but only until I realized that I'd drawn Pinkie Pie's legs waaaaaaay too short and it was bugging the heck out of me. Thus, I decided "ah the hell with it, I'll draw it again, only BETTER!"
And I did! It's an important rule I learned while doing this project: don't be afraid to erase something, and don't be afraid to start all over from scratch. You may come up with something even better if you pour all your effort into it!
Inking was done with my handy-dandy Faber-Castell PITT pens (black), two of which ran out of ink and needed to be replaced. Coloring was done with my equally handy-dandy Prismacolor markers. Both pieces (Celestia and the Mane 6 portion) were cut out using an exacto knife, glued together, then mounted on a black Canson art board using rubber cement.
Awesome thing is, I promised my client that she'd be getting the picture before Oct 20th, and she'll be getting it tomorrow! Plus, her daughter doesn't know that she's getting this, so it will be a great surprise for her.
